Overview
Positioned in Northern Laos, Luang Prabang experiences a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 15 to 38°C (59 - 100°F)
The city undergoes two distinct seasons throughout the year:
-
The rainy season, occurring from May to October, is marked by hot and humid conditions, occasional heavy rainfall, and temperatures between 23 and 38°C (74 - 100°F
-
On the other hand, the dry season, from November to April, brings minimal rainfall, creating a pleasant and cool atmosphere with temperatures ranging from 11 to 26°C (52 - 79°F)
The best time to visit
The most agreeable weather for travel is during the dry season, spanning from November to April. During this period, outdoor and indoor activities remain unaffected. Visitors can freely explore renowned tourist spots, unwind, engage in trekking, and enjoy river cruises on the Mekong.
However, due to the appealing weather, this is also the peak tourist season. I recommend you to plan and book tickets in advance for at least 3 months to secure reservations and good rates.
When is the best time to visit Luang Prabang?
Between May and October, the rainy season brings hot and humid weather, featuring occasional showers lasting from 30 minutes to a few hours.
Just keep in mind that rainfall doesn’t occur daily. If you can endure the heat well, this might be a suitable time to travel, offering better prices and a quieter, less hectic atmosphere. In addition, the scenery during the rainy season is lush and more vibrant green.

Wet Season
Boat racing festival
So, what should you be aware of when exploring Luang Prabang in the rainy season? Here are some considerations from me:
-
Visit Kuang Si Waterfall: During the rainy season, this renowned waterfall showcases a more vigorous cascade. Unfortunately, from June to October, Kuang Si Falls temporarily loses its enchanting turquoise color. Swimming and hiking become difficult due to muddy paths.
The entrance fee of 20,000 Kip to this area also covers the bear conservation visit. You can still explore to some extent.
-
Boating in Mekong River: During the rainy season, water areas like the Mekong River tend to rise with strong currents. This is also the time for the boat racing festival on Khan River around September 14.
-
Watch out for slippery conditions: Luang Prabang’s roads, particularly those outside the town, wind through forested mountains and rural areas with rough paths. Things are fine on sunny days, but during the rainy season, it can get quite muddy. Make sure to wear shoes with good traction.
-
About hiking: This time is usually not ideal for hiking due to potential dangers. However, jungle walking on sunny days is perfectly fine. Just remember to ensure you stay well-hydrated.
Kuang Si Fall at its best in the year is from November to April
