Scooters and Motorbikes

The best way to get around in Bali is cruising around the island on a scooter or motorbike. Why?

  • It’s affordable to rent and provides a great deal of flexibility.

  • It allows you to access places from the beach to a bustling market with ease.

  • You can have more sense of freedom and adventure.

Renting a scooter in Bali is relatively straightforward. There are many rental shops that can be found in popular tourist areas. Daily prices range from around 64,000 IDR (~ 4 USD) - 160,000 IDR (~ 10 USD) depending on the type of engine, excluding gasoline.

These rental services are also near your accommodation. Here are some key tips to consider when renting.

  • You need an international driving permit (IDP) or a valid motorcycle license.

  • Before taking off, you should check the scooter for any pre-existing damage to avoid disputes upon return.

  • Don’t forget to wear a helmet and if you are new to driving, you can add protective gear such as knee pads.

  • Aware local traffic rules, customs and road conditions.

  • Fill up the gas near the rental shop because you can run out of gas on the long roads.

  • Parking fee is around 5,000 IDR (~ 0,31 USD) - 10,000 IDR (~ 0,63 USD) per vehicle.

Ride-Hailing Apps

To answer the question “How to get around in Bali?”, I recommend you using ride-hailing apps. In recent years, ride-hailing apps such as Gojek and Grab have revolutionized transportation in Bali. These apps provide an easy and convenient way to get around. Using Gojek and Grab in Bali is a breeze. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

Step 1: Download the app: Start by downloading the Gojek or Grab app from your device's app store.

Step 2: Registration: Create an account by providing your contact details and a valid payment method. You can link your credit card or pay in cash after your ride.

Step 3: Enter your destination: Open the app and enter your destination. The app will display the estimated fare for your trip.

Step 4: Choose your service: both apps offer various services, including Go-Ride (motorbike), Go-Car (car), and Go-Food (food delivery). Select the service that suits your needs.

Taxis and Car Hire

In Bali, Bluebird Taxis are renowned for their reliability and safety. You can visit their official website to download the app Blue Bird Taxi. They operate with meters, ensuring fair and transparent pricing. The fee for the first 1 km is 7,000 IDR (~ 0,44 USD) then 6,600 IDR (~ 0,41 USD) for each additional kilometer.

For me, if you’re looking for a more personalized and comfortable travel experience, you can hire a private car at a price of 319,000 IDR (~ 20 USD) per day. In addition, you also can hire a car driver. Here are a few key points to consider when hiring a private driver:

  • Private drivers can help you create a customized itinerary based on your interests.

  • Traveling in a private car provides more comfort and space compared to taxis or motorbikes. This can be a great option for families.

  • Many drivers are knowledgeable about the island’s attractions so they can provide valuable insights.

  • You need to discuss the pricing beforehand to avoid misunderstanding.

Bus

While Bali's bus system may not be as extensive as other modes, it offers a cost-effective way to get around. Starts at around 5,000 IDR (~ 0,31 USD) for short distances but you’ll be charged more if the driver knows you’re foreign. There are 2 well-known types of bus:

  • Kura-Kura Shuttle Bus: it is a popular choice for tourists. It operates on set routes and schedules, connecting major tourist areas and attractions. The bus is air-conditioned and comfortable, making it a convenient way to explore Bali.

  • Local Buses: Bali has a network of public buses that connect various parts of the island. According to my experience, they may not be as comfortable or punctual as tourist-specific options. It’s easy to go wrong and quite troublesome so you should go with local friends.

Hopefully the above article will help you answer the question “How to get around in Bali?”. In my blog, I clearly introduce you to 4 ways to move on the island: by bicycle, via ride-hailing apps, by car and bus.
