Brief History of Vietnamese Conical Hat
According to studies by scientists, the conical hat was born from 2500 - 3000 BC, the image was carved on the Ngoc Lu kettledrum and the Dao Thinh bronze jar. Looking back on history, it was around the 13th century during the Tran dynasty in Vietnam.
Artisans make the first conical hats
Due to the characteristic of a tropical climate with erratic weather, Vietnamese farmers immediately think about how to put leaves together to cover the sun and rain. Gradually this hat became a necessary item in daily life. Initially, the conical hat was made in a circular shape, later the cone. Vietnamese conical hats have a strong frame and a high aesthetic that creates charm for the users.
The image of a traditional Vietnamese conical hat
As I said, leaf hats are not only used to protect farmers from harsh weather, but also they represent modest and idyllic life. Therefore, in the old days, Vietnamese women often dressed Ao Dai with Non La to enhance feminine beauty. In this way, Vietnamese conical hats become a symbol of the people in general and Vietnamese women in particular.
One way that Vietnamese leaf hats become a meaningful gift for international tourists.

How does it make?
The materials for making conical hats are quite simple, it is only made from leaves such as palm, mortar, or bamboo, but to make a beautiful conical hat requires artisans to have elaborate and very skillful hands. A conical hat is made after 4 main stages, from collecting leaves to decorating in the conical hat-making process.
Stage 1: Material Preparation
To create beautiful conical hats, the leaves have to be dried on a charcoal stove before making. Next, they are dew-dried to reduce stiffness. As far as I know, the product is nicer if the leaf is flattened a bit.
Stage 2: Making hat frames
The hat frame is made of dry and flexible bamboo yarns. They are bent into different-sized circles. The cone frame has about 16 bamboo yarn circles with the largest one up to 50 cm in diameter and the smallest one only equal to the size of a coin. Artisans arranged these circles from the largest at the bottom to the smallest at the top to cone form.
Stage 3: Roofing
After making the frame, artisans arrange the leaves on top, this time requiring them to do it evenly so that the leaves do not overlap. Every hat will be covered with 2 leaf layers: the inner layer and the outer layer. Each conical hat has different thickness requirements, so it will be covered with 20-30 leaves. In that way, the artisans can create conical hats with unique character and beauty.
Stage 4: Completing
After the leaf layer has been completely covered, it will be securely sewn to the frame with nylon yarn. Afterward, the craftsman will apply a layer of varnish to increase the durability and aesthetics of the product.
Finally, a complete conical hat is indispensable with straps tied symmetrically on the sides. The straps of the conical hat are made from silk velvet with vibrant colors.
